The Internet: When Faster is Better

The advent of the broadband connection and the inevitable recession of dial-up to oblivion opened up the Internet to seemingly endless possibilities. Now the question: Is it being put to good use?

In 1987, a very notable economist, Dr. Robert Solow boldly stated, "You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics." More than 20 years later, many still echo the economist's views. The Internet has spawned a number of activities, trends, technology, lifestyles, etc. a regular netizen engages in, depending on his/her area of interest. For some of them the Internet has become a major part of life, if not, their entire life. The rise of high-speed Internet made a significant impact on technology, politics, culture, arts, religion, ethics, business and economics, and just about every aspect of human existence. Think about YouTube and MySpace and you'll get my drift.

Broadband made it possible to upload, download and share much larger data like videos, music, and flash applications. The words "boring" and "plain" can now be erased from your online vocabulary. Information and the latest buzz are now "fed" instead of searched. We advertise using videos hoping that its being interactive will result in its being effective. We shop online, even date online. Some of us put every grit and detail of our life in blogs and, more recently, vlogs. A lot of people earn their living online. Outsourcing jobs has never been more prevalent. There is something for everyone on the Internet. Whether you fit into or create your own niche, it's your call. Now, more than ever, the Internet is ruled by user-generated content and everybody is being called to be creative, and more! And that's because we're running on daredevil speeds.

How significant is broadband then? Did it make our lives better? Hardly. If we look more closely, the use of broadband leans towards fields related to entertainment. The full potential of broadband and its possible applications has not yet been fully exploited. And there is little evidence that supports the notion that faster is better, given most activities done in the Internet nowadays. "Faster Internet is innovation and productivity" seems to be a faulty conclusion.

At least for now.

Paul David, an economist at Oxford University, argues that new technologies do not immediately raise productivity, but it will, given time.

So blog your days away, watch YouTube and listen to podcasts, play games and tweak your MySpace profile but make sure to spend a few minutes of your creativity to consider how else we can fully optimize this technology. Something that will have a significant impact in our lives.
