You've Got Mail - So What?

A 1998 flick starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks romanticized the email craze and pushed the go button for online dating. Now 10 years later, a new study reports that experienced internet users are getting less and less likely to park in their mailboxes in anticipation for the next email. Why? For a number of reasons, but mainly because: (1) email has lost its novelty; and (2) other interesting, more efficient ways of communicating have been sprouting like mushrooms.

A lot of other options have been widely available like text messaging, IM, blogging, etc. We have apps, RSS and other feeds that also let us preview the email if it's relevant or not. And there's facebook, myspace, twitter, to name a few. Who needs email to keep up with just about everything?

If it's just communication, we have ways and means of every form to address that need. But email is starting to be shoved to the backstage among other dusty props. Yahoomail and Gmail, in a desperate attempt to make email attractive again, incorporated "chat" modules in their interface. Colleges are now creating Facebook and MySpace pages to keep in touch with their students with some accouncements as email alerts are likely to be ignored. Just about everybody in the internet blogs, exchange PMs through facebook or myspace, post comments on profiles, post bulletins, and chats through MSN or yahoo. You don't logon to your email, you logon to your facebook, myspace or your messenger. Instant messaging has penetrated the workplace and is now being used widely, with advantages outweighing the disadvantages. A good number of netizens admit they use emails only to register to website/forums, some says emails are reduced to notifications, again just another breeze-through alert.

So is email gone for good?

Not just yet. Email still holds its place as a means of communication in various industries. Work ethics will still frown on sending audit trails to colleagues on their facebook accounts. Although more and more businesses right now use social networking sites for promoting their products and services, it's less likely that more "delicate" business affairs will be discussed via these sites. Again, it all boils down to what will do the trick and what form fits what kind of communication. Given this fact, popularity doesn't follow email has been replaced by these forms. If anything, these forms compliment email and give us wider options for our various communicating needs. Which is not bad as long as we know how to make use of them to our advantage.
